Videos: AP Abnormal Psychology & Treatments Unit -9
Depression, the secret we share. One of the best videos I've ever seen on depression. Period.
Notice how much this guy loved being in the military, had great support from his family, his religion, and his training. But after 20 years, he too fell apart with PTSD. People are just not built for continued conflict and loss (I am sure he's seen a lot of terrible stuff-good people being hurt, fiends dying, etc...). We all have our breaking point, most of us much sooner than his.
Elizabeth Holmes. She was a 19 year old Stanford drop out who started a business that was going to be able to do hundreds of blood tests with a single drop of blood very quickly with a device that can fit on a desktop. She was confidant and quotable and got her company worth up to $9+ billion dollars. She seems to be a narcissist and her lawyer even used her condition as a narcissist for her defense for defrauding investors when she knew the company was going no where (seemingly). An interesting question in cases like this was the person hopefully naïve, purposely scamming for money, or mentally ill in that she wanted something other than money and/or is delusional. In her case she faked a deep voice, seemed not to take advice from anyone, repeatedly lied, acted abusive toward employees and many other things to seemingly show how brilliant and visionary she is. She also got pregnant before trial, seemingly for sympathy, but how selfish and self-interested is that, and does it speak to some kind of psychopathy? Getting pregnant before trial is something that Dianne Downs did too: a verified narcissist with anti-social personality disorder who shot her 3 kids: not good company to keep.
This woman Belle Gibson seemingly has factious disorder. She pretended to have cancer and made a whole story about it and ended up getting so much attention and selling a cookbook and an app for healthy eating that she said saved her when her normal doctor couldn't. More, she had done something very similar when younger and continues to do so. It's longer, but it's interesting. She might be a malingerer too in that she did make money off her supposed sickness, but I personally think that what drives her is the attention.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard. She suffered from Factious Disorder Imposed on Another (formally Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy) in which a caretaker, usually a mom, makes the child seem sick or actually does make them sick so they can get attention and/or sympathy and/or have a purpose. The case of Gypsy Rose is one of the more high profile and intense cases there have been.
F.A.T. City Part 1 (Frustration Anxiety and Tension). A video on learning disorders with a lot of insightful comments and some very interesting, educational, and entertaining simulations for others of what it's like to have a learning disorder. To my students: watch to 31:40min, or more if you'd like.
Clay Marzo. A professional surfer diagnosed at the time with Asperger's, now part of the Autism Spectrum. It's almost his superpower in that it makes him single-minded in his focus on surfing, but also his undoing in that he can't socialize well with needed sponsors and media on the pro surfing circuit.
